How to Record Your Screen Without Installing Any Software

By ShareRec Team5 min read

ShareRec lets you record your screen in any modern browser — Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari — without installing any software, browser extension, or plugin. You get a shareable link seconds after you stop recording.

What you need

  • A modern browser (Chrome 74+, Edge 79+, Firefox 66+, Safari 13+)
  • A screen you want to show
  • A microphone (optional, for voice narration)

That is it.

Step 1: Open ShareRec

Go to sharerec.com and click Sign Up Free or Start Recording.

Step 2: Choose what to record

ShareRec gives you three recording modes:

  • Screen only — captures everything visible on your monitor
  • Webcam only — records your face from the built-in camera
  • Screen + Webcam — shows your screen with a webcam picture-in-picture overlay

For most tutorials, walkthroughs, or bug reports, Screen only is the right choice.

Step 3: Grant browser permissions

Your browser will ask for permission to access your screen. Click Allow. ShareRec never stores raw screen data beyond your recording session.

When you choose voice narration, the browser also asks for microphone access. Click Allow for that too.

Step 4: Record

Press Start Recording. A small control bar appears at the bottom of your screen. When you are done, press Stop.

Step 5: Share your recording

ShareRec immediately processes your recording and gives you a link. Paste it anywhere — Slack, email, Jira, Notion — and anyone with the link can watch the video directly in their browser. No account required to view.

Free tier recordings are available for 24 hours. Upgrade to Pro or Business for longer retention.

Why no software install is a good thing

Installing a screen recorder means granting a desktop application deep OS-level access to your screen, audio, and sometimes camera. Browser-based recording uses the standardized Screen Capture API, which sandboxes the recording to a specific window or tab you explicitly select.

You also avoid update nags, auto-launches at startup, and background processes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does ShareRec work on Chromebook?

Yes. Chromebooks run Chrome, which fully supports the Screen Capture API. Open ShareRec in Chrome, click Start Recording, and choose the window or tab you want to capture.

Can I record a specific tab instead of my whole screen?

Yes. When the browser permission dialog appears, select Chrome Tab (or the equivalent in your browser) instead of Entire Screen. This limits the capture to one tab and hides everything else.

Is there a time limit on free recordings?

Free recordings are capped at 3 minutes. Pro ($8/month) extends this to 30 minutes. Business ($12/month) allows recordings up to 2 hours.

What happens to my recording after 24 hours on the free plan?

The video and its link are permanently deleted. Download it before it expires, or upgrade your plan if you need recordings to last longer.

Do I need to create an account to record?

You need a free account to save and share your recordings. Signing up takes under 30 seconds and requires only an email address.
